The Upper Captiva Fire Protection and Rescue Service District is seeking qualified part-time Firefighter/EMT or Firefighter/Paramedic candidates. This position performs fire suppression, emergency medical response, rescue operations, equipment maintenance, training, and other duties necessary to support District operations.

Because Upper Captiva is a remote barrier-island community, personnel must be able to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and respond effectively in conditions where mutual aid or additional command support may be delayed. Depending on staffing and incident conditions, the assigned firefighter may be required to serve as the initial Officer-in-Charge until relieved by a senior officer.

• Emergency Response and Operations: Respond to fires, medical emergencies, rescue calls, marine incidents, wildland-urban interface incidents, and other emergency situations. Provide fire suppression, exposure protection, rescue assistance, and emergency medical care within the scope of certification and District protocols.
• Apparatus and Water Supply Operations: Safely operate District vehicles and equipment, including off-road apparatus and auxiliary pumping equipment, as assigned. Assist with water supply operations using available island resources such as canals, pools, or other approved static water sources.
• Equipment Maintenance: Inspect, clean, maintain, and report issues with apparatus, tools, medical equipment, hose, pumps, and station equipment. Complete required post-incident cleaning and flushing after exposure to saltwater, brackish water, pool water, or other corrosive conditions.

• Station & Facility Maintenance: Performs routine housekeeping, facilities maintenance, and groundskeeping to maintain clean, safe, and operational fire station standards.

• Pre-Planning and Local Knowledge: Maintain working knowledge of island roads, trails, addresses, access limitations, hazards, water sources, and pre-incident plans.
• Reports and Documentation: Complete incident reports, patient care reports, daily checklists, equipment logs, and other required documentation accurately and on time.
• Training and Compliance: Participate in required drills, continuing education, physical fitness activities, and District training programs. Maintain all required certifications, licenses, and approvals.
• Community Service: Provide courteous, professional assistance to residents, visitors, and partner agencies. Perform other related duties as assigned by Command Staff.

• Firefighter Certification: Current State of Florida Firefighter II certification.
• EMS Certification: Current State of Florida EMT or Paramedic certification. Candidates must be able to maintain local medical direction approval as required.
• Driver’s License: Valid Florida driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
• Experience: Five years of fire suppression and emergency medical experience is preferred.
• Physical Ability: Ability to perform strenuous work in emergency conditions, including heat, smoke, humidity, uneven terrain, and other challenging environments. Candidates must successfully complete required medical, physical, background, and employment screening processes.
• Availability and Adaptability: Ability to work flexible, rotating, or assigned part-time shifts and operate effectively in a remote island environment with limited immediate support.
