Would emergency responders be able to find you if you needed help?

In an emergency, every second counts, and there is no better way to help us out than to have your address clearly marked. Don’t wait for an emergency to find out that your address is not visible from the street.

Address recognition is the priority once the dispatcher has routed the appropriate response team. Vital seconds are lost on every call when the home address numbers are not clearly marked. This is a common problem on our island. The lack of standards and thought to this issue are clearly contributing factors.  Your Upper Captiva Fire and Rescue first responders are suggesting a solution by requesting all homeowners consider adding a reflective address sign to your property.

Make sure everyone knows where to find you. 911 address signs and numbers make it easy for emergency vehicles, or even your friends, to find the way to your house.  Below you will find two good sources to purchase reflective signage to fit your home and address the standard address number dimensions to be effective even at night.

  • Make it easy for fire trucks to get to your house.
  • Clearly label your street name and house number with noncombustible metal signs and posts.
  • Make sure your address is large enough to read and clearly visible from the road, including at night.
  • In case of brush fires, make sure the driveway has a 15-foot clearance of vegetation, and create a 30-foot-wide defensible space around your home.
